Asturias Symphony Orchestra
OSPA was founded in 1991 under the patronage of the Government of the Principality of Asturias, with the primary aim of enriching the region musically and culturally. Its Honorary President is King Felipe VI of Spain. OSPA is an Autonomous Organization of the Ministry of Education and Culture and a member of the Asociación Española de Orquestas Sinfónicas (AEOS). Heir to the former Provincial Symphony Orchestra, whose origins date back to 1939, and the Asturias Symphony Orchestra, OSPA is a benchmark orchestra for its versatility, interpretative capacity and indisputable quality. OSPA is made up of sixty-nine musicians from the European Union, Russia, the United States and Latin America. Its main activity revolves around its annual concert seasons in Oviedo and Gijón. It has been home to some of the most important soloists and conductors on the international scene, including its own principal conductors, Jesse Levine, Maximiano Valdés, Rossen Milanov and Nuno Coelho, who took over as principal conductor and artistic director in 2022. Every year, OSPA takes part in the Princess of Asturias Award ceremony concert and the traditional Christmas Concert, the latter in close collaboration with the Fundación Princesa de Asturias Choir. Also noteworthy is its important participation in the opera season of the Asociación Asturiana de Amigos de la Ópera. OSPA also carries out intense educational and social work in Asturias, which has been expanding its horizons year after year. Outside the Principality, OSPA has performed in the most important festivals, auditoriums and halls in Spain. Its international appearances include concerts in Mexico, Chile, France, China, Bulgaria and the Vatican. OSPA's discography began with works of Asturian themes or by Asturian authors such as Benito Lauret, Julián Orbón and Ramón Prada. OSPA recorded for labels such as ARTEK, Classic Concert Records, Channel Classics and NAXOS, with the latter receiving excellent reviews for its recordings of Manuel de Falla and Joaquín Rodrigo.
