Jorge Vaz de Carvalho

With a degree in Modern Literature from the Faculdade de Letras of the Universidade de Lisboa, a Master in Comparative Literature from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa and a PhD in Cultural Studies from the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Jorge Vaz de Carvalho has developed a multifaceted path in the cultural panorama, with an important expression in music and literature. He has done musical studies since he was a child (piano, classical viola and lyrical singing). In 1984, he switched from teaching secondary school to that of an opera singer, having made his debut at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon, to whose resident company he belonged until he started his international career in 1990. As an opera singer, he performed numerous leading roles in Europe, Asia and Oceania, having worked with notable conductors, directors and singers. His vast repertoire included American musicals and operetta, he regularly performed in recitals, and his concert activities spanned major composers, from baroque to contemporary music. He sang and recorded several works by Portuguese composers, some of which were premiered and which were specially dedicated to him. As Scenic and Vocal Director of the Opera Atelier of the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, he scenically directed the operas Le Nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, Così Fan Tutte, La Clemenza di Tito and Die Zauberflöte by Mozart and also L'Elisir d'Amore by Donizetti. He is regularly invited to give masterclasses in voice and operatic interpretation in Portugal and in Italy. He has been part of the jury of important national and international singing contests. His literary work includes poetry, short stories, essays (2010 PEN Clube Prize and 2011 Jorge de Sena Prize) and translation (2006 FCT/União Latina Scientific and Technical Translation Prize; several works by Umberto Eco; Ulisses by James Joyce (APT/SPA Literary Translation Grand Prize 2015); New Life, Conviviality and Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri; etc). He was Director of the Orquestra Nacional do Porto, having led the process of building the symphonic formation, and Director of the Instituto das Artes. He is a professor at the Faculdade de Ciências Humanas da Universidade Católica Portuguesa.
