Nuno Coelho
In the 2022/23 season, Nuno Coelho made his debut as Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the Principado de Asturias Symphony Orchestra. This season also marked his fifth year as Guest Conductor of the Gulbenkian Orchestra and his debut leading orchestras such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam and the Philharmonics of Tampere and St. Gallen, as well as concerts with the Helsinki Philharmonic, Dresden Philharmonic, Hannover Opera Orchestra, Luxembourg Philharmonic, Malmö and Gävle Symphony, Strasbourg Philharmonic and Lille National Orchestra. In Spain, he continued his close relationship with the Galicia and Barcelona Symphonies. Winner of the Cadaqués International Conducting Competition in 2017, he has since performed with the Royal Liverpool Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic, Castilla y León Symphony, Teatro Regio Orchestra in Turin, Hamburg Symphony and the Beethoven Orchestra in Bonn. In the 2018/19 season he conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic several times as a Dudamel Conducting Fellow and conducted a concert together with Bernard Haitink and the Bavarian Radio Symphony. Between 2015 and 2017 he was Assistant Conductor of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and Conducting Fellow of the Tanglewood Festival in the USA. Nuno Coelho was born in Porto in 1989. He studied violin in Klagenfurt and Brussels, and orchestral conducting in Zurich with Johannes Schlaefli. He won 1st prize in the Conducting Competition of the Antena 2 Young Musicians Award, the Neeme Järvi Prize of the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad and was a finalist in the Salzburg Festival Competition for young conductors. In 2014 he received a scholarship from the Gulbenkian Foundation and in 2015 he was accepted onto the Dirigentenforum of the German Music Center, which later named him to its Conductors of Tomorrow list. In March 2022 he conducted a semi-staged version of Così Fan Tutte at the Gulbenkian Foundation. In the operatic repertoire, he has also conducted La Traviata, Cavalleria rusticana, Hänsel und Gretel, Rusalka, Das Tagebuch der Anne Frank and Sieben Todsünden. He was also Marc Albrecht's assistant in the production of Parsifal for the Dutch National Opera.
