Diogo Martins

The cellist Diogo Martins was born in 1999 and began his cello studies at the Conservatory of Music and Arts of Dão.

He currently resides in the Netherlands, where he completed his Master’s degree in Performance with the highest distinction at Codarts Rotterdam, under the guidance of Joachim Eijlander. Previously, he studied with Miguel Rocha at the Escola Superior de Artes Aplicadas in Castelo Branco. Throughout his training, he has participated in masterclasses with renowned cellists such as Ophélie Gaillard, Xavier Gagnepain, Varoujan Bartikian, Andrew Fuller, and Catherine Strynckx.

In 2023, he premiered his original solo project Segunda Voz, inspired by the work of José Afonso, and has since performed as a soloist in venues such as Tivoli Vredenburg (Utrecht) and De Doelen (Rotterdam), and at festivals including À Corda (Coimbra) and the International Cello Festival Zutphen (Netherlands). He also appeared as a soloist with the Orquestra Filarmonia das Beiras in 2017, after winning the Young Soloist Competition of the Fundação Lapa do Lobo.

He is a founding member of the Quartz Quintet, with whom he won 1st and 2nd Prizes at the Folefest Competition in 2019 and 2018, respectively, and 2nd Prize at the Antena 2 Young Musicians Competition in 2021. With the Quartz Quintet, he has performed at festivals such as À Corda and the Madeira Chamber Music Festival, and in venues such as Casa da Música (Porto). The group has also been the dedicatee of three works recorded on the CD Raiz do Som 1.

Diogo frequently collaborates with the Doelen Ensemble (Netherlands) and the Orquestra Filarmónica Portuguesa. In 2022, he served as principal cellist in the opera Die Fledermaus at the Berlin Opera Academy, and since 2023 he has collaborated with the Neue Philharmonie München (Germany) and FAME’S European Orchestral Performing Institute (North Macedonia).
